About us
Built around industry. Driven by collaboration.
Aluminium Innovation Valley brings together ten companies in and around the aluminium industry in Sunndal. The network was established to turn industrial expertise, technology and collaboration into new solutions, stronger value chains and new business opportunities.
Our purpose is to turn collaboration into innovation, growth and new opportunities across the aluminium value chain.
AIV is rooted in one of Norway’s strongest industrial environments for aluminium, but its ambitions extend far beyond the valley. The network is a collaborative arena where the participating companies identify common challenges and opportunities and develop joint initiatives – strengthening their positions nationally and internationally.
Our long-term ambition is to develop Sunndal into a leading technology cluster within aluminium, with sustainable, low-carbon products and solutions that are competitive and relevant internationally.
Bringing companies together to share expertise, identify common challenges and find opportunities where collaboration creates greater value.
Identifying and developing joint innovation and R&D projects with commercial and export potential.
Strengthening technology, competence and competitiveness while developing new products, services and business models for the aluminium industry.
An industry-led network, formally established by its ten founding companies.
Aluminium Innovation Valley is built on active participation and collaboration between its ten founding companies. The network was formally established in 2026 through a binding cooperation agreement, following a feasibility study and development process initiated by the participating companies.
The work is coordinated through the network together with project management from Sunndal Næringsselskap (SUNS).
The members of the steering group will be presented here once confirmed.
Initial meetings between companies in Sunndal lead to an initiative to explore the potential for a formal aluminium industry network. Innovation Norway awards NOK 100,000 for a feasibility study.
Ten companies take part in the feasibility study for an aluminium industry network in the Sunndal region. Workshops, knowledge gathering and industry visits identify opportunities for closer collaboration and a shared ambition to continue the work.
A steering group is established and an application is submitted to Innovation Norway for support for a main project to develop the network further.
Innovation Norway supports the main project with NOK 800,000. On 16 April, ten companies sign a binding cooperation agreement and formally establish Aluminium Innovation Valley.
AIV moves from establishing the network to developing concrete collaboration, innovation and R&D projects, strengthening competence and creating new business opportunities across the aluminium value chain.
